Hurricane Irene and helping out
September 2, 2011
Looking at all the news coverage of VT, upstate NY and areas
of NJ our community is very blessed that ywe were not harder hit
by Hurricane Irene. I know when disasters strike many people
ask what they can do to help. The town of Windham, located two
hours north of here in the Catskills was hit particularly hard.
My family is from this town and Jim and I have a second home
here. Our home was fine, but others were devastated. Windham
is a small town of about 1700 people and like Awosting it is a
very close knit community where neighbors help neighbors. In
this town the creek rose very rapidly and created massive
flooding. Main Street WIndham was basically wiped out. Windham
has been declared a disaster area by Fema and the National Guard
is there helping out. Jim and I traveled up there earlier this
week and I have never seen such mass devastated before. It is
very sad.
Here are some of the needs of the town, they are looking for
bottle water, non-perishable food, coffee, flashlights,
batteries, computer paper, wipes, blankets, medical supplies,
toiletries, feminine hygiene, anti-bacterial soap, rakes,
shovels-snow shovel are good, buckets, work gloves, cleaning
supplies, , garbage bags, rubber maid storage for people to
store there items in.
Jim will be going up to Windham first thing in the morning to
help friends with clean up of their house. We will be filling
our jeep with supplies to bring up for the community. If you
are making a shopping trip later or have an extra items in your
house we will be collecting items for donation. You can drop
them off at our doorstep this evening. Jim will be leaving at
daybreak tomorrow. Our address is 186 Long Pond Road.
IF any one would like to help with clean up tomorrow -- Jim has
room in his car and you can let us know. Or if you want to help
out over the weekend the command center is giving out
assignments and I can get you more information on where to meet.
Here are two news stories on the town.

A fund has also been set up to help the town. Apparently it
is a health and welfare fund that was set up in Windham 100
years ago:

Thanks to everyone that helped with the playground cleanup
July 17, 2011
Thanks to everyone that helped with the playground cleanup. Special thanks to Allison Moody for coordinating the efforts!!! It was a fun day and I am very proud of all the hard work the kids (and parents) did to help improve their playground! With all the volunteers – it only took 5 hours to make the playground look great! If you haven’t had a chance, please stop by and see the results of everyone’s efforts.
Put the “U” back in our Community!!
Please continue to look for ways you can help to keep
Awosting a great place to live. If you have any ideas or
initiatives you’d like to see happen with but are unsure how to
get it done– let me or Lyz Best know and we can help get you
started.
Thanks again everyone!!
